Areca Palm:

The Areca palm is a tropical, stamping (forming cluster or group) palm known for its feathery long leaves, air-purifying qualities, and suitability as both an indoor and outdoor ornamental plant.

Sunlight Requirement – Areca Palms prefer bright, filtered sunlightfor about six to eight hours daily. Avoid direct afternoon sun.

Watering Requirement – Water to keep soil moist but not soggy.

Humidity and Temperature – Areca Palms thrive in warm temperatures between 18°C and 24°C (65°F–75°F) and appreciate moderate to high humidity.

Soil and Potting Mix – Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture but does not become waterlogged. Adding perlite or coarse sand improves drainage.

Soil Mix suggestion – Peat moss or coco coir (30 %) , Perlite or Pumice (20 %), Coarse sand (30 %), Compost (20 %).

Do’s –

Water your Areca Palm when the top inch of soil feels dry.
During spring and summer, water more frequently, and reduce watering in fall and winter.
Feed – Liquid or solid fertilizer rich in Potassium and Manganese.

Don’ts –

Avoid placing the plant near cold drafts or air-conditioning vents.
Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves and cause brown tips, and low light, which slows growth and reduces foliage density.
Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering causes drooping and yellowing leaves.

Pro Tips –

Rotating the plant every few weeks ensures even growth and prevents leaning toward the light source.
Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater. Do not use tap water having chloride or heavy metals.
Increase humidity by misting the leaves several times a week, placing the pot on a tray of water and pebbles, or using a humidifier.
Repot every two to three years or when the plant becomes rootbound.
Feed your plant with good fertilizer every month in growing season(February – September).
Spray neem oil mixed into water every month on the plant.

Common Issues –

Areca palms are highly sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering.
Sensitive to direct sunlight, which can scorch leaves, and insufficient light, which slows growth.
They do not tolerate temperatures below 60°F (15°C) or sudden winter drafts.
Areca palms are susceptible to spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects.
